’Tis the season for year-end roundups. How many hours of music did you listen to on Spotify? How many books did you log on Goodreads? How many Duolingo lessons did that incessant green owl bully you into completing?
At Funga, we LOVE crunching numbers. Reflecting on what we’ve achieved and how far we’ve come motivates us—and fuels the work ahead. So before we turn the page on another year, here’s Funga’s 2025 by the numbers.

63,691 Unique Fungal Species Observed in Soil Samples
Funga’s researchers collect soil samples from all over the Southeast and sequence the DNA present in the soil. To date, we have observed thousands of unique species, furthering our understanding of the forest microbiome and what a healthy, flourishing belowground ecosystem should look like.
*Our scientists would like to add the caveat:
“Actually, that [number] is really dependent on how you interpret the biological species concept. In fact they are operational taxonomic units clustered at 97% ribosomal DNA similarity based on the ITS2 marker gene region."
...aren't they fun?
28,000 Cumulative Acres Enrolled
As of this year, our grouped carbon project spans an area of land that is roughly twice the size of Manhattan!
80+ Land Partners
That acreage is thanks to over 80 land partners across 12 states in the Southeastern U.S. who have signed on to restore their forest’s microbiome.
12M+ Seedlings Inoculated
During the 2025 season, we inoculated over 12 million seedlings to be planted across carbon projects, standalone inoculation service projects, and trials that draw down additional carbon over business as usual forestry. That is more than three times what we inoculated in 2024!
11 New Team Members
Scaling up our operations called for significantly scaling up our team as well. In 2025 we welcomed Forester Liam Gogel, Carbon Program Manager Kimiko LaHaela, Nursery Research Coordinator Lily Gannon, Landowner Operations Specialist Sofia Reitsma, Landowner Enrollment Specialist Andrew Stewart, Ecological Data Scientist Zoey Werbin, Data Engineer Denis Willett, Strategic Finance Manager Will Gardner, Senior Business Development Manager Sydney Davenport, Senior Business Operations Manager Megan Keller, Forester Cal Oakley, and Science Operations Manager Ryan Keeling.
13 Blog Posts
In 2025 we announced some exciting collaborations with Chestnut Carbon and the American Forest Foundation, introduced many more Funga team members in our “Meet the Team” series, and reflected on the role of both carbon markets and timber in a more sustainable future.
29 Questions Answered on Our FAQ Page
As a part of our website redesign earlier this year, we wanted to address ALL your most pressing questions. If you’ve been wondering about Funga's science, business model, or carbon markets as a whole, you are likely to have your curiosity satiated here.
1,052 Funga-branded Bandanas Out in the World
Our most popular swag item has been given to land partners, collaborators, foresters, conference attendees, investors, and most importantly, all dogs in the Funga-family.
122 Custom Emojis in Funga's Slack Workspace
We cannot express ourselves accurately without Ted Lasso, baby Yoda, Bluey, a pine tree wearing a cowboy hat, a dibble bar, the “pinkie promise” hand signal, three screenshots from K-pop Demon Hunters, and (obviously) thirteen variations of a dancing mushroom.
9,051 Linkedin Followers
Not sure if “we have 7X more fungal species than Linkedin followers” should be a brag or a dig…

10,000 MORE Soil Samples in 2026
In 2026 we are aiming to significantly increase our soil sample library, enhancing our knowledge of forest microbiomes and improving the accuracy of our inoculant-prescribing models. If you are a landowner in the Southeastern U.S. managing loblolly or longleaf pine forests, and want to learn more about the benefits of our soil sampling program, reach out to land@funga.earth.
